BYD Seal vs MG4: Price

The biggest factor that makes or breaks a deal is definitely the price. If the price is not right, you probably will stay away from that deal and if the price is right, you will buy it. Both of these cars, the Seal and the MG4 can be considered as a great deal if you look at the market in which they are placed.

The BYD Seal is a compact executive sedan, while the MG4 is a hatchback. These models are not on the same level both performance wise and pricewise.

So, the starting price for the BYD Seal is about $29,500. While the MG4 starts as low as $18,000 in China.

With options, these prices can understandably grow. So, for a well equipped BYD Seal, you can expect to pay around $40,280. While for the most well equipped MG4, you can expect to pay up to $25,970.

Overall, the MG4 is a much more affordable vehicle and you can get a fully loaded model much cheaper than the base BYD Seal. So, this category is an easy win for the MG4.

BYD Seal vs MG4: Design and Interior

Now let’s take a look at the design of these cars. The design is very important, especially when choosing a new car that will serve you for years. You need a vehicle that matches your character and makes you happy when you drive it.

Both models look rather decent and have good exterior design. Both cars look very modern and follow the latest trends in the industry. But there is one major difference. The exterior design of the MG4 is all about aggression. This model implements sharp lines and aggressiveness that basically no other vehicle on the road has.

While the BYD Seal is softer and it has more rounded edges and a more appealing look for those who want something more conventional. So, it really depends on what you are after. Some people love the aggression of the MG4, while some want to get a more conventional car.

Our personal favorite is the MG4 because this model delivers a very good design and definitely is the best hot hatch when it comes to EVs. The interior of these cars is a completely different story. This is the area where things start to fall apart for the MG4.

The interiors of these two cars are not even worth comparing because the BYD Seal is so much better. The design is simply beautiful with soft touch materials everywhere and the technology is excellent.

While the interior of the MG4 is more utilitarian and simply not up to the task when it comes to luxury, features, and other key areas.

BYD Seal vs MG4: Power and Performance

Power and performance is a really important factor when it comes to buying a new EV. EVs have to perform in order to be considered as a good purchase. By this, we mean that they have to deliver an excellent acceleration.

Both of the base models of the BYD Seal and the MG4 are not powerhouses. But they make decent power. The most important thing is that these are rear wheel drive cars.

The more powerful model is the BYD Seal. This model makes up to 150 kW. Which is about 201 hp.

While the MG4 makes 125 kW. Which is 167 hp. So, overall, the BYD Seal is a much more capable model, achieving 34 hp more compared to the MG4.

In terms of acceleration, these models are pretty close. The BYD Seal is able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in only 7.5 seconds, while the MG4 needs 7.9 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h.

So, when we consider all these numbers, the clear winner is the BYD Seal. But since the MG4 is a lot cheaper, it has an advantage for those who want to get a similar performance for a relatively lower price point.

BYD Seal vs MG4: Battery and Range

Another extremely important thing that you need when buying an EV is the range. Range anxiety is a common thing with EVs nowadays, these cars stall in the middle of nowhere if you have a poor range and you embark on a long distance trip. So, if you want to enjoy your trips without care, getting an EV with proper range is a good idea.

What is good in this situation is that both of these models have very strong range numbers. For example, the BYD Seal has a range of 550 km on the base model and on the long range version with a larger battery pack, you get up to 750 km.

While the MG4 has a base range of 425 km and a max range of 520 km if you decide to opt for the larger battery pack.

Still, the BYD Seal is a much better performer. With the most capable model, you will basically forget when it was the last time you charged up the battery. That’s why if range is your concern, the BYD Seal is a clear winner.

BYD Seal vs MG4: Autopilot and Other Tech

Nowadays, EVs are associated with technology. Manufacturers compete very hard and try to offer as much tech as possible in their models in order to gather more sales.

When it comes to the autopilot, the BYD Seal comes with a Level 2 autonomy. So, what does this mean? This means that you have adaptive cruise control that will allow you to drive on the highway with minimal intervention.

The MG4 has the MG Pilot and this system also offers Level 2 autonomy just like in the BYD Seal. So, in this area these models are pretty equally placed. The ADAS system that is used in the BYD Seal is named Dipilot, while the system installed in the MG4 is named MG Pilot.

Both of these systems are pretty much similar, they implement cameras and sensors to make quick decisions and maximize the safety.

Important features that these systems have include: blind spot detection, adaptive cruise control, rear cross traffic alert, rear cross traffic brake, traffic sign recognition, front collision warning, emergency braking, and lane keep assist.

When you compare the two systems, they both perform pretty similar because the hardware they are using, as well as the software is limited to these functions only. You cannot expect these cars to have Level 3 autonomy or something similar.

But in general, these are decent systems that will definitely improve your safety. The adaptive cruise control is a very nice feature to have while driving on the highway.

BYD Seal vs MG4: Size and Body

Size also plays a very vital role when it comes to buying a vehicle. A car has to be practical and meet the requirements that you have. If it doesn’t you will struggle. When it comes to the overall size, the BYD Seal is a much larger vehicle. Both of these are compact models but the Seal is the larger one.

The BYD Seal has a wheelbase of 2,920 mm and an overall length of 4,800 mm. While the MG4 has a wheelbase of 2,705 mm and a length of 4,287 mm.

So, you get the idea why the BYD Seal has a big advantage compared to the MG4. It is much roomier and able to fit people comfortably. In the MG4, rear passengers, especially taller ones might struggle for headroom and legroom.

When it comes to practicality, in the BYD Seal you have a frunk at the front, while in the MG4 you don’t have a drunk. Cargo space in the rear is good for both cars. But the BYD Seal is still a better performer, managing to accommodate 400 liters compared to the 363 liters of the MG4.

So, overall, in terms of practicality, the BYD Seal is a clear winner by far in this showdown.

BYD Seal vs MG4: Safety

When buying a car, safety should be one of your top concerns. A car has to be safe in order to be considered as a viable option for purchase.

We noted previously about the powerful ADAS system that you have in both of these models. These models deliver Level 2 autonomy and implement very similar hardware, software, and functions for this system.

This is very good because the ADAS system is a real lifesaver. These new systems saved thousands of lives already. When it comes to the overall safety of these cars, we can say that the safety is rather good.

Both of these models were crash tested by the Euro NCAP. The highest governing body in Europe when it comes to vehicle safety. And both of the models got 5/5 star ratings overall. Both the BYD Seal and the MG4 are excellent performers and you will not make a mistake if you choose one of these two models.

BYD Seal vs MG4: Warranties

Warranties also play a very vital role when it comes to making a decision to purchase an EV. You just never know what could happen with the car. So, what do you get for these two models?

With the BYD Seal, you will get a 6 year or 150,000 km vehicle warranty. While for the battery, you will get 8 years or 160,000 km.

With the MG4 you will get a 5 year or 150,000 km vehicle warranty and 8 year or 150,000 km battery warranty.

Both companies give the same warranty for the battery packs. But the benefit with the BYD Seal is that you get 1 more year of warranty on the vehicle compared to the 5 year warranty on the MG4.

This is why if this plays a crucial role when buying, you should opt for the BYD Seal.

BYD Seal vs MG4: Additional Considerations

There are no important additional considerations when it comes to purchasing one of these two models.

Maybe besides from the fact that BYD is a much larger company than MG. BYD is the largest EV manufacturer in the world and their models are basically on par with Tesla. While MG is more like an entry level EV brand.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the BYD Seal is a much better option than the MG4. This is the case because the BYD Seal is a completely different league compared to the MG4. The BYD Seal is larger, more practical, more powerful, and most importantly, a more premium model than the MG4.

But this results in the cost for purchasing the BYD Seal. The BYD Seal costs $29,500 in China, while the MG4 costs $18,000. And you can get a fully loaded MG4 for less than a base BYD Seal.

This is why if you are looking for an excellent deal, the MG4 is the way to go. If you can afford more and want to get something more premium, the BYD Seal is the better alternative.
