In the last 15 years, we witnessed tremendous development in terms of technology. This period is a giant leap forward in terms of silicon chips, batteries, AI, and other essential technologies that make our life easier.
One of the industries that saw a huge benefit from all these developments was the electric car industry. This industry started from 0 to 13% in terms of sales in the global market as of 2024. Which is a massive development in such a short time period.
During this period, Tesla was the forerunner but Chinese companies quickly got up to speed and started to introduce their own electric cars.
Two of these Chinese companies are BYD and XPeng. BYD, a long time battery manufacturer and XPeng, a fairly new player in this industry. Nowadays both of these companies are some of the most popular ones in the market.
So, we feel that there is a need to compare them in many key aspects. These include technological innovation, performance and user experience, autonomous driving, environmental impact and sustainability, pricing, and other key areas. So, letโs dive into it!
Technological Innovation

Letโs start our comparison with one of the most important areas, which is technological innovation. In other words, what innovations these two companies brought to the market.
Long before BYD became an EV manufacturer, it produced electric batteries. In 2003, they decided to enter car manufacturing and bought a small car maker in Norinco. They released their first model.
But as the years went by, more and more successful models followed and BYD became a big name in China.
An area where BYD specializes is in terms of car batteries and electric powertrains. BYD has created the Blade battery. So, what is the Blade battery?
Well, this is a car battery that implements a different design compared to your regular EV batteries. Instead of putting the cells into packs, BYD is installing the batteries into arrays. Which makes the battery pack a lot simpler and lighter. Making it more energy dense and offering better performance.
One of the areas of technological innovation by XPeng is the advancement of autonomous driving.
For this purpose, XPeng opened a company in California known as XMotors.ai. This company is working on its own autopilot known as the XPILOT.
XPeng has also invested heavily into charging. They have a charging network of more than 1,000 chargers across China. Making it the only company that can actually compete with Tesla in this area.
Performance and User Experience

One key area where an EV should deliver is in terms of performance and user experience. The user experience should be flawless when it comes to any product.
And since both of these companies are very popular, we can say that they are doing a pretty good job in this area and they deliver some of the best experience for their customers.
Both XPeng and BYD offer products in a variety of different segments. But their focus predominantly is the sedan and SUV segments.
In the sedan segment, BYD offers models such as the BYD Seal and BYD Han. XPeng on the other hand offers the P5 and P7 models.
Basically these vehicles compete with each other. The P5 competes with the BYD Seal, while the P7 competes with the BYD Han.
The P7 and BYD Han are probably the models that offer the best luxury and performance at the same time.
But the XPeng P7 is the better option when it comes to driving and performance. While the BYD Han is more focused towards interior comfort and features.
BYD is not a company that focuses a lot on performance. BYD is more focused in creating a better user experience. Inside, you have a lot of features and the usability of their system is something that another company can hardly replicate.
Thatโs why if you want performance, XPeng is a good option, while when it comes to usability and living with an EV on a daily basis, BYD has you covered.
Autonomous Driving Capabilities

Autonomous driving is probably one of the fields where we should see the most development in the upcoming years. This is an area that is still underdeveloped because of limitations with hardware and software.
What is worth noting is that both XPeng and BYD are investing heavily into this technology and are working very hard to introduce this new technology first.
XPeng has a company known as XMotors.ai in California, USA, where they are testing their self-driving vehicles and they are training different algorithms to adapt to any situation on the roads.
BYD is also working very hard in this area and they recently introduced the Xuanji system. This is an AI system that is helping the driver and passengers to get the maximum autonomy while driving on the highway and while parking.
As we noted previously, we are still far behind proper autonomous driving technologies. Most of what BYD and XPeng models can deliver is Level 2 autonomy. Which is made possible with the adaptive cruise control system that is part of the ADAS.
Market Presence and Global Expansion

Both BYD and XPeng are companies that are rapidly growing and adapting to the current situations that are present on the market. They look to invest in every area across the world that will potentially be profitable for them.
For example, XPeng has invested heavily in new production capacities to meet the demand for vehicles.
XPeng is also expecting to have a global reach and enter some European markets. XPeng is already present in Norway but in the near future they will also be present in other markets including Germany, France, and the UK.
BYD also focuses on creating a big international footprint. They are working very hard on this and in 2023, they had a 334% increase in global sales compared to the previous year.
BYD is present in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and Brazil. There are still some untapped markets and BYD will make sure that they become present over there as well.
Model Lineup and Innovation

The model lineup is probably one of the main things that tell you which company has the most advantage over the other. And luckily for you, both of these companies are working very hard compared to the competition.
XPeng has a smaller lineup compared to BYD. The lineup of XPeng consists of two sedans, the P5 and P7. There is also one minivan that is named X9. There are also two SUVs, the G6 and G9.
In total, XPeng has 5 different models and hopefully more models will come in the future.
On the other hand, BYD has plenty of cars. The smallest subcompact models are the BYD Seagull and BYD Dolphin. These are basically the entry level models.
Then you have the BYD Seal and BYD Han. These two models are sedans. The Seal is the smaller, while the Han is the full-size luxury sedan.
Then, you have a few SUVs. These include the BYD Atto 3, BYD Song Plus, and BYD Tang. The Tang is understandably the largest model.
Overall, BYD is a company that offers more for you as a buyer compared to XPeng.
Environmental Impact and Sustainability

EV are vehicles that are meant to be sustainable and eco friendly. In other words, to deliver the best impact to the environment compared to the regular internal combustion vehicles.
So, both BYD and XPeng have a very strong commitment to sustainability and saving the environment. BYD also committed to reduce the temperature of the planet by 1 degree.
These companies also focus on minimizing the carbon footprint during the production of these vehicles. In other words, they choose companies that use eco-friendly methods of mining for minerals and other materials needed for producing these EVs.
Pricing and Affordability

Pricing and affordability of a certain product is a very important factor. If the car is not within your budget you will probably skip on it. And if it’s in your budget, you will buy it. So, how do these two brands compare?
Well, it really depends. Letโs compare the BYD Seal and the XPeng P5. These two are the smaller sedans that are available in China.
The Seal starts at $29,580, while the XPeng P5 starts at $21,150. Making this model a lot cheaper compared to BYD Seal.
Another comparison is with the BYD Han and the XPeng P7. The BYD Han starts at $31,140, while the XPeng P7 starts at $32,960. And as you can see, the models are pretty equal in price.
BYD also has entry level models that are $10,000 to 13,000. These are the BYD Seagull and BYD Dolphin.
But overall, in terms of pricing, these two companies sit very closely together. It really depends on the model itself and the options that make the difference.
Brand Image and Perception

When it comes to buying a new car, the brand image is probably one of the things that plays a very vital role. Many people out there are not risk takers and often rely on other opinions when it comes to buying something expensive such as cars.
BYD has a very strong reputation in China and across the world. This brand sold more than 3 million cars in 2024 and is definitely the biggest player in the whole EV segment.
So, people are naturally leaning towards BYD in most cases when it comes to buying a new model. Or Tesla in some cases.

While XPeng is still a fairly young company that does not have that reputation that BYD has and understandably they have fewer sales.
But this company is evolving and in the future years, it is expected that XPeng will become one of Chinaโs top EV brands.
After-Sales Support and Maintenance

One of the most important aspects of owning an EV and any car is the service infrastructure. One thing is to purchase an EV and completely other is the maintenance and repairs that often come along with cars.
So, considering that BYD is so large, they are obviously one of the best when it comes to service infrastructure.
They have a great coverage in Europe and many parts of the world. XPeng only has coverage in China, Norway, and soon will start to sell cars in other European countries like the UK, Germany, and France.
Warranty is also very important when buying a vehicle. BYD offers an 8 year or 160,000 km warranty on the battery and the same amount as a vehicle warranty.
XPeng offers a 7 year or 160,000 km warranty on their cars. Which is pretty similar to BYD.
Future Outlook and Industry Trends

Both of these companies are in check with the time and follow the latest and greatest trends in the EV segment.
So, we can say that both BYD and XPeng will grow in the near future since the EV market is fairly new and the possibilities are pretty much endless.
BYD is the greatest EV carmaker right now and this is expected to stay for 2024 as well. However, XPeng is expected to enter some new markets and also improve the production capacities in order to meet the high demand for its models.
This will probably be the biggest challenge for XPeng for the years to come.
Conclusion
In this article, we compared BYD and XPeng in many key areas. Some of them include the technologies and innovations, self driving capabilities, performance, pricing, lineups and more.
Overall, both of these brands are rather good. But the one that stands out more is definitely BYD. BYD is a company that is the No.1 EV manufacturer in the world and this is why it is hard to place BYD in second position.
XPeng is another great new company but there will be a couple of years until this company gets to the same level as BYD is today.
