About Changan

History of Changan
Changan develops many products, including passenger cars and commercial vehicles. Changan is Chinaโs oldest automaker. It started in 1862 when Li Hongzhang, a Chinese Statesman, set up a military supply factory, the Shanghai Foreign Gun Bureau.
The factory was moved to its current location in 1937, during the Second Sino-Japanese War, after the Japanese bombed the previous location. During this period, the company was building different products from cars.
In 1959, Chongqing Chang’an Arsenal, under contract to the government, started manufacturing and building Changjiang Type 46 vehicles. This was the first production of the cars since the launch of the factory.
The company was also named Changan Machinery Manufacturing Plant. Later 1963, Changjiang built the off-roader rolled out of the factory in 1,400 units.
In the 1980s, the military merged Changan with another weapons maker. The joint company was named Changan Automobile Group, and in 1989, they started selling some new cars. Changan proceeded to establish joint ventures with companies like Suzuki in 1993.

Changan acquired two automakers, Hafei and Changhe, in 2009, but in 2013, Changhe was transferred to Jiangxi’s provincial government for restructuring. It later became a majority-owned subsidiary of BAIC Group.
China Weaponry Equipment was the parent company of Changan as of 2010. That year, Chang’an became the fourth most productive car manufacturer in the Chinese automobile industry after selling 2.38 million vehicles.
Also, in 2010, the company released a new logo for its consumer offerings, but the commercial production retained the red-arch brand. Later, in 2011, Changan made over 2 million whole vehicles.
In 2012, Changanโs 72% of production was dedicated to passenger vehicles, and in November of the same year, Changan Ford Mazda Automobile became two joint venture companies: Changan Ford and Changan Mazda.
Later, in 2018, Suzuki decided to leave the Chinese market entirely.
