Chery Automobiles Co., Ltd. was founded in Wuhu, Anhui province, as a state-owned corporation in 1997. Later, the company was purchased by Beijing Chery Auto Development (Group) Co., Ltd., headquartered in Jining City, Shandong Province. But what are the events that took place earlier?
In 1996, Chery’s vice president, Zhou Biren, flew to the UK to buy the engine manufacturing equipment that had been discarded by Ford. Chery factory construction project started in 1987, and they started manufacturing the first car upon completion.
At the end of 1999, Chery rolled out its first car, and in 2000, mass production of the earlier Chery models commenced. During the year, they sought a partnership with a foreign automaker. Tie-ups with Chrysler and Fiat were touted, but they did not work.
2001 Chery started exporting their cars from China to the overseas market. This year, they produced 28,000 Fengyun sedans due to increased sales. Later, in 2003, Chery was ranked the largest passenger vehicle exporter. The sales this year increased to 3,655.
Chery proceeded to produce low-cost models, and in 2004, they started assembling cars from complete knock-down kits in Egypt and Iran. By 2007, they had 25,000 employees and vehicle sales exceeding 400,000 units.
Still, in 2007, Chrysler planned to cooperate with Chery, aiming to sell Chery A1 as a Dodge-brand car in the US and other overseas markets. So, they signed the ceremony because the deal would increase Chrysler’s small car sales.
Fiat and Chery signed a memorandum of understanding for a car-making joint venture in 2007. The two companies had intended to begin manufacturing Fiat and Alfa Romeo-branded products for the Chinese market in 2009. However, the deal was put on hold in March 2009.
In 2009, the company’s sales had risen to 467,000 vehicles, most of which were sedans. Chery produced their millionth vehicle in 2010; by 2011, they had exported 25% of their total production.
By 2012, Chery was ranked the 10th largest automaker in the world. This year, Chery also formed a 50:50 joint venture with Jaguar Land Rover to produce Jaguar and Land Rover cars in China. Chery launched the Brazilian plant in August 2014, with a first-phase production capacity of 50,000 units per year.
The company later sold 50% of its stocks in Brazil to the CAOA group in 2018. In 2020, Chery planned to buy a percentage of Tata Motors to gain entry into the Indian market and for Tata Motors to get technology for some of their cars. However, the plan hasn’t been implemented due to Covid-19.
In 2021, the company claims to have sold over 960,000 units. Around 269,154 cars were exported to Brazil, Russia, Qatar, Saudia Arabia, and Malaysia in the year, a 30% increase.
In 2022, the number increased to 451,337 because of combining low-cost vehicles with a wide range of models. In addition to the two domestic research and development offices, the company established other offices worldwide, including Germany, the United States, and Brazil. They had 5500 employees focused on research and development.
The company started selling in Mexico under the Chirey brand in 2022. Chirey name was due to American businessman Malcolm Bricklin owning the Chery trademark in North America. He had planned to import Cherys to the US and Canada earlier.
In May 2023, the company exported 74,056 vehicles, its most ever export in a month. Chery also launched a new brand, iCAR, in 2023, targeting young customers.
