Price is the factor that makes or breaks a deal. If the price is right, you will probably go for that model and if it’s too expensive, the car is not within reach.

So, knowing how these two models compare in this aspect is crucial if you want to get a great deal. And luckily both of these models are within reach for the EV buyers. Their prices in China are simply irresistible.

The MG MG4 starts as low as $18,000 in China. While the BYD Atto 3 is a bit more expensive. This model starts at $19,430.

For a fully loaded MG4 with dual motors and larger battery, you can expect to pay up to $25,970. While for a fully loaded BYD Atto 3, you can expect to pay about $23,320.

And as you can see, both of these models are excellent deals that you just cannot miss. But one thing to add is the import fees. Prices in China might be low but the import fees to your location might depend on your local authorities.

Some countries do not have any fees for EVs, while some have very steep import costs. So, proper research is always a great idea before buying.

MG4 vs BYD Atto 3: Design and Interior

The exterior and interior design plays a very important role. This is the thing that attracts us to these cars. So, how do these two models perform in this area?

From an exterior standpoint, the MG4 is a real mean machine. This model implements a rather aggressive design language. It implements a sleek front end with sharp angles that make this model one of a kind. It is easily one of the best looking hot hatches in the market right now.

And these lines accompany the model all around. There is not a single rounded corner on the MG4. And this is why we love this model so much. Especially for this price point it is easily one of the best out there looks wise.

The BYD Atto 3 on the other hand is a modern design but a lot softer. It is not overly aggressive and this model although an EV, it greatly resembles a standard SUV. And here comes the great difference between these two models.

The BYD Atto 3 is an SUV, while the MG4 is a hatchback. The MG4 sits a lot lower than the BYD Atto 3 and is a bit shorter than the Atto 3.

The interior of these models is a completely different story. We really loved the exterior of the MG4, but when it comes to the interior, this model lags behind the BYD Atto 3.

The MG4 has a good cabin but the one of the Atto 3 is far more refined and better looking. The Atto 3 belongs in BYD’s Ocean Series and the interior takes a lot of inspiration from ocean life.

So, when you enter the cabin you can feel that energy that simply never stops to impress you. Overall, the BYD Atto 3 is the winner when it comes to both exterior and interior design.

MG4 vs BYD Atto 3: Power and Performance

Power and performance is really important when it comes to choosing your future EV. An EV has to perform and deliver a thrilling acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h. But how do these two models perform in this aspect?

Well, these are no performance machines by any means. We are talking here about the base models of both of these cars.

The MG4 is a model that implements only one electric motor in the rear. This means that it is rear wheel drive. This motor produces up to 125 kW or 167 hp. This performance is not a lot but is enough to deliver an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in only 7.9 seconds.

The BYD Atto 3 has a single motor as well, but in this model, the motor is located in the front. Making this a front wheel drive model.

The electric motor in the BYD Atto 3 makes about 150 kW or 201 hp. Which is a bit better performance than the MG4. 30+ hp is a difference that you can feel.

But since this is a larger model than the MG4, acceleration is pretty similar. The BYD Atto 3 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in only 7.5 seconds.

The downside of the BYD Atto 3 is that this power is limited across all of the models. While with the MG4, you get a high-performance version with dual motor setup and all-wheel drive.

This model delivers up to 422 hp and has an acceleration of 3.8 seconds. Making it the fastest hot hatch in the EV market. This model is perfect for those who want a blazing fast acceleration.

Battery and range play a very important role when it comes to determining which EV is the right option for you. We are saying this because range anxiety is a problem.

People are experiencing this on a day-to-day basis. This is why you should get a vehicle that meets your demands in terms of range. So, how do these two models perform?

Well, both of these models deliver good range. Let’s start with the MG4. This model delivers a minimum range of 425 km.

The MG4 is powered by a 51 kWh battery. But if you want, you can get a 60 kWh battery with  a longer range. This long range version delivers up to 520 km, which is a really solid number for such a car.

On the other hand, the BYD Atto 3 is performing similarly. With the BYD Atto 3, you have a base model with a 50 kWh battery and a range of 430 km. You can also choose a 60 kWh battery pack and this model will deliver a range of 510 km overall.

So, considering these numbers, we can say that both of these models perform similarly and deliver a similar range.

This is why it is hard to choose between the two, but the MG4 has about 10 km more range on average than the BYD Atto 3. That’s why our vote goes for the MG4.

MG4 vs BYD Atto 3: Autopilot and Other Tech

One of the main features that an EV should have is autopilot. People have created a concept that EVs should be self-driving cars since Tesla introduced their models with the so-called “autopilot”. Which is still not working. So, how do these two models perform in this area, do they have an autopilot?

Well, not quite, both of these models implement something known as Level 2 autonomy. This is the second level that gives you the ability to drive on the highway autonomously with the help of the adaptive cruise control feature.

So, we can say that these are not self-driving cars since the driver has to interfere and tell the car that he is in control.

Behind this Level 2 autonomy is the powerful ADAS system. The ADAS system refers to the Advanced Driving Assistance System. This system incorporates cameras, sensors, and radars. Then, through powerful algorithms, it is able to make instant decisions and improve safety.

Other features that this system offers include: blind spot monitoring, automated emergency braking, lane keep assist, front collision warning, traffic sign recognition, lane departure warning, rear cross traffic brake, and parking assists.

Overall, this technology is enough to make you feel safe, although you still cannot drive autonomously.

Both of these models are pretty much equal in this case, it really depends how much you can spend to activate all of the features.

Vehicle size plays a very vital role when it comes to determining which car will be good for your needs. If the car lacks space, you will struggle with this vehicle and the car will frustrate you in the long term.

When it comes to these two vehicles, we can tell you that the BYD Atto 3 is the larger model in this comparison.

The BYD Atto 3 is longer overall and has a longer wheelbase. In addition to this, the Atto 3 is wider than the MG4. This means that with the BYD Atto 3, you will not struggle for space inside the cabin.

The passenger comfort will be extremely good and the rear passengers will drive in absolute comfort. Especially taller people.

Basically, in all of the aspects the BYD Atto 3 has an advantage over the MG4.

When it comes to storage, with both of these models you lack a frunk. There is no storage under the hood like the one you can find in Tesla models for example.

You can only store items in the rear, with the MG4 you have 363 liters of cargo space, while with the BYD Atto 3 you have up to 440 liters of cargo space. This is about 80 liters of space more with the BYD Atto3.

This is why we strongly recommend the BYD Atto 3 over the MG4 when it comes to practicality. This model is simply far more practical than the MG4.

We noted previously that both of these models have ADAS. This is the safety suite that packs hardware and software to monitor the surroundings and make quick decisions.

Only this aspect places these cars high up in the safety category because when having such features your car is much safer. Both of these models also meet the rigorous safety requirements of the Euro NCAP.

These cars were crash tested and scored 5/5 stars overall. But the model that has a slight advantage is the BYD Atto 3. This is the case because this model sits a bit higher and has a higher ground clearance. This makes this model a bit safer than the MG4.

What is good about these two cars is that you get an 8 year or 160,000 km warranty on the battery. The battery is literally the most expensive piece that could go wrong and having some security is always a good idea.

While the overall vehicle warranty for the MG4 is 7 years or 160,000 km. While the warranty for the BYD Atto 3 is 8 years or 160,000 miles.

So, overall, the BYD Atto 3 has a slightly better warranty coverage than the MG4.

There are no important considerations that you need to take when it comes to buying one of these models. Maybe besides the fact that these models are different in terms of size. The MG4 is a hatchback, while the BYD Atto 3 is a crossover SUV.

Final Thoughts

Overall, both of these models are really good for the money. But the BYD Atto 3 is the better purchase.

This is because the BYD Atto 3 is larger than the MG4 and far more practical. This is why if space is your top concern, you should definitely choose the BYD Atto 3.

If safety is not one of your concerns, you can go for the MG4. In terms of powertrains and batteries, they perform pretty similarly.

Both are pretty good cars, the main thing is the personal preference and driver’s needs.
