What is It?

NIO ES8 is a battery-powered mid-size luxury SUV produced since 2019. The model entered the market as a smaller sibling to the NIO ES8 and the second SUV product from NIO.

While the NIO ES8 accommodates seven passengers, the ES6 has a space for only five people. The ES6 is powered by lithium-ion battery packs of 75kWh, 100kWh, or 150kWh. What else, you ask? The SUV is a 4-wheel drive with motors delivering a maximum power of 360kW.

The car is manufactured and marketed by NIO, a successful electric car manufacturer in China. NIO Inc. boasts of being a leading manufacturer of premium smart electric vehicles.

When you hear of when the company started, youโ€™ll be amazed. Yes, it was founded in 2014 with a mission to shape a joyful lifestyle.

Its dreams seem true because many people enjoy smart technologies and efficient rides. NIO aims to build the community with smart electric cars in different designs and features to suit individual needs.

What differentiates NIO from other automakers is its continuous technological breakthroughs and innovations. For instance, the company has industry-leading battery swapping technologies, battery as a service, and autonomous driving technologies.

What About the Looks?

What About the Looks?

NIO ES6 exterior styling is a mini NIO ES8, which isn’t bad. The car has an updated fascia that aligns it with other models like the new ES8.

The straight belt line in ES6 is one of the highly noticeable features that makes the side profile look clean and modern. The wheel arches are well-rounded, unlike in the first generation, when they were square and less attractive.

Looking at the front and the back, the car has some touch of sportiness because the trunk, lights, and front grille and lights look classy. The car has a hidden rear wiper, which allows better visibility.

The trunk space is also good because there is a 579L space when the back seats are up and an additional 100L space under the boot floor. It even becomes more spacious if you drop all the seats.ย

NIO ES6 brings with it a high cabin refinement and polish. The material choice makes the interior very welcoming, and a center console for the rear passengers clearly indicates how NIO values traveling comfort.

The car maintains the twin-screen layout and the wireless charging pad beside the driverโ€™s seat. Additionally, there are two USB-C ports, and the headroom remains excellent since the car is 1703 mm high.

Youโ€™ll get a 3-zone A/C, 5G connection, and the 23-speaker 1000 W sound system at the cockpit. The rear seats are adjustable like the front, and the roof has an electronic sunshade.

Finally, youโ€™ll enjoy using the multifunctional steering wheel since the buttons are designed to select a wide range of features without taking your focus off the windshield.

And to Drive?

NIO ES6 has features that will help you navigate the gravel terrains and mild off-road conditions. Youโ€™ll have 9 dedicated modes to help you drive the car, including the Snow, Sand, Towing, and Wet.

However, you must handle this SUV carefully because the ground clearance of 165 mm and the approach and departure angles of 17 and 20 degrees are the best for rough roads.

The NIO ES6 seems to be more dynamically tuned than other models. The steering wheel is well-weighted, offering a good amount of feel when driving.

On the other hand, the chassis is well tied down, giving the car some sporty performance. The NIO ES6 feels more like a station wagon than the typical SUV because of its ground clearance.

Also worth noting is that NIO ES6 has no air suspension but Continuous Dampening Control. The system allows the air suspension to offer more variance in different driving modes.

The car moves from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds, which is impressive considering its motors have a maximum output of 360kW and 700Nm.

If you want a smaller sibling to NIO ES8, you can go for NIO ES6.

What’s in a Name?

What's in a Name?

NIO names its vehicles in a certain scheme. The NIO ES6, for instance, is the Electric SUV, and six refers to the size. Itโ€™s a smaller SUV compared to the ES8, therefore given the number six.

In Europe, the car is named EL6 because Audi felt that the ES6 name was too close to their S6 model during marketing. This would cause confusion in the market, so NIO changed the marketing name to EL6.

You Mention High-Tech?

NIO ES6 has a watchtower sensor housing at the top of the windscreen. The sensor consists of a LiDAR unit with two eight-megapixel cameras. The car has seven cameras since the Aquila also has four 3MP cameras.

The ES6 has 12 ultrasonic radars, one vehicle-to-road sensor, two high-precision positioning units, and a driver monitoring system. Its major function in assisted driving is the NOP+ (navigation on pilot), which gives a high level of autonomous driving capability.

NOP+ can carry out overtaking and highway exiting maneuvers, improving the driving experience. On the other hand, there is a digital assistant, Nomi. Nomiโ€™s capabilities in China are far more extensive than in Europe because it can withstand more random requests.

The only downside of the Chinese Nomi in earlier modes is that it only speaks Chinese, so purchasing a used car from China will require reprogramming.

The second generation NIO ES6 system has some improvements because itโ€™s programmed in English. It features the latest Banyan 2.0.0 operating system, which is excellent.

The ES6 also has a 10.2-inch LED instrument cluster and a 12.8-inch infotainment screen at the front. The rear passengers also have a screen on the center console between the front seats. The car has 5G connectivity and can also create a Wi-Fi hotspot.
